Andrew Burns in Tribunal security incident
An attempt on Friday 18 June 2010 to attack a judge with a meat cleaver has raised concern about security in the Employment Tribunals. Andrew Burns, who was in court at the time, took swift action to disarm a man who had walked unchallenged into Reading Employment Tribunal and threatened the judge, Russell Hardwick, with a meat cleaver. Andrew commented: “This incident raises questions about why there is not the same level of security as at County Courts. There are generally no scanners or bag checks at Tribunals nor security devices in the tribunal room”.
