Devereux welcomes Thomas Westwell and Matthew Bignell
Following the successful completion of their pupillages, Tom Westwell and Matthew Bignell have joined Devereux Chambers as tenants. Both Tom and Matthew have gained significant experience across all of Devereux’s core practice areas over the past 12 months.
Tom studied Classics at the University of Oxford, graduating with a Double First in 2010. He completed the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) in 2011 and the Legal Practice Course (LPC) in 2012, both with Distinction. Before moving to the Bar, Tom was a solicitor at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP. After qualifying at the firm in 2014, he spent four years as an associate in the employment, pensions and employee benefits team.
Matthew graduated from the University of Bristol in 2016, gaining an LLB (Hons). He completed the Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) course at the University of Oxford in 2018, and he completed his BPTC at City Law School in 2021. Before coming to the Bar, Matthew was a Teaching Fellow at Queen Mary, University of London where he taught land law, and was a Research Assistant at the University of Oxford focusing on national security and counter-terror law. Prior to that, Matthew was a Paralegal at the Metropolitan Police specialising in civil litigation. He was also a Legal Editor at Sparqa where he drafted advice on employment, commercial, and data protection law.
